“At once I came under the [Holy] Spirit's power, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne! And He Who sat there appeared like [the crystalline brightness of] jasper and [the fiery] sardius, and encircling the throne there was a halo that looked like a rainbow of emerald.” (Revelation 4:2-3 Amplified Bible)

To understand the perspective of these verses in Revelation chapter 4, we must back up to Revelation 1:10 as John says, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet...” I believe John is making a distinction from His regular ‘earthly’ experience as he declares that he was in the Spirit. As he was now in the Spirit, John had come into a different realm. It is my belief that at this point John had ascended to the ‘second heaven’. I say this because of his perspective. The second heaven, ouranos in Greek, is where principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, the governmental spiritual entities have their power. John’s focus appears to be upon the church in the earth as the Trumpet Voice has been declaring, “But I have a few things against thee...” Of course, the ‘trumpet’ is symbolic of the prophetic ministry, and often the prophetic ‘trumpet’ is utilized to confront sin. I am by no means a proponent of the ‘sin-conscious’ mentality that religiousity tries to accost us with, however I do believe that the Father generally allows us an accurate view of who we are ‘in Adam’ before He shows us who we are ‘in Christ’. That is why the Trumpet Voice has been declaring for the last couple chapters in Revelation, “But I have a few things against thee...” I believe this represents the view from the second heaven... and I believe that it is important that we have an understanding of this ‘second heaven view’... we just don’t want to STAY THERE! Unfortunately, much prophetic ministry in the Church has not progressed from the ‘second heaven view’.

I strongly believe that the call today is, “Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be...” (Revelation 4:1) Certainly there has been revelation in this verse that has been applicable throughout the centuries, but I feel a very definite ‘quickening’ of this verse for THIS TIME in history. And to grasp the perspective, we must understand that this call to come up hither is a call to ‘come up higher’ than the ‘second heaven view’! This is a call to ‘come up higher’ to the third heaven! You see, John has just entered into another realm through this “door standing open in heaven,” his environment has entirely changed and I believe his focus has changed. His focus for the last couple chapters has been upon sin and the church in the earth, now his focus is upon the Throne of God and the Glory of God.

It is important to note that John says, “At once I came under the [Holy] Spirit's power...” The call today is for a people who, laying aside the soulish power of the self-life, have come ‘under the Holy Spirit's power’. It is only as we do this that we receive a clear vision of the Throne of God, and it is only as we come up higher than the ‘second heaven view’ that we can truly grasp the truth of the absolute sovereignty and authority of the Father. From the ‘second heaven view’ there appears to be struggle between good and evil that seems to be somewhat equally matched in power. How may sermons have we heard that could be summed up as ‘satan vs. Jesus’? Let’s face it, who wants to turn on the TV and watch a sporting event when one team totally dominates and defeats the other, without any contest?... sounds like a good time for a nap on the couch instead. Unfortunately, we may bring that same mentality into our understanding of spiritual things. There is NO equally matched contest between Jesus and satan. When Jesus said, “It is finished: and He bowed His head, and gave up the ghost” (John 19:30), if there EVER WAS a contest, it was over at that moment! I, personally, do not believe there ever WAS a contest, as “the works were finished from the foundation of the world” (Hebrews 4:3) because “of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8).

Until we, like John, have come ‘under the Holy Spirit's power’ we will never have an accurate vision of the Throne of God and His sovereignty. “...and behold, a throne stood in heaven...” When we are truly ‘under the Holy Spirit's power’, all we can see is the Throne; “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the CALLED according to His PURPOSE... If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:28, 31)

Let us turn our attention for a moment to this One who is on the Throne. “And He Who sat there appeared like [the crystalline brightness of] jasper and [the fiery] sardius...” Sardius is a red stone and was the first stone in the first row of the breastplate of Aaron, the high priest (Exodus 28:17). Jasper was the last of the gems (the third stone in the fourth row) in the high priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:20), probably the green jasper. I believe that it certainly is NO coincidence that OUR High Priest, the One who is the First and the Last, the Beginning and the Ending (Revelation 1:8) has the appearance of the first and last stones of the breastplate.

According to Ephesians 6:14, the breastplate speaks symbolically of righteousness, “Stand therefore... having on the breastplate of righteousness”, and of our High Priest, 2 Corinthians 5:21 states, “For He hath made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” When we compare those Scriptural truths, the meaning of the colors of the stones takes on great significance.

You see, red speaks symbolically of the shed Blood of Jesus and the fiery wrath of God that was poured out at the Cross as the Father literally “made Him (Jesus) to BE SIN for us.” Just as the red sardius was the FIRST stone, even so the very foundation of the new Covenant is the shed Blood of Jesus, the full judgment of God poured out at the Cross, in order that “we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”

So many in Christendom today are still living under an ‘Old Covenant mentality’, expecting the judgment of God around every corner. ‘Doomsday prophets’ are a dime-a-dozen, and huge ministry ‘machines’ are built upon the dissemination of bad news! Unfortunately, if you live on planet earth for any amount of time, something ‘bad’ will probably happen. That is simply the reality of living in a world that is in the process of being subdued as the kingdoms of this world become the Kingdom of the Lord and His Christ.

However, may I declare to you today that God is not ‘mad’?! He’s not sitting around stewing over world conditions, anger boiling just beneath the surface ready to ‘blow’ at any moment like a spiritual Mount Vesuvius. He is not in need of any ‘anger management’ instruction... although perhaps there are some Christians who could use some ‘anger management’. You see, the full weight of the judgment of God for sin was summed up and given full expression in the Christ-event (the crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ). The world has BEEN judged for sin, declared guilty, and the full judgment poured out upon the only Begotten Son. “We did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted... and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us ALL.” (Isaiah 53:6) It is upon this basis of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross that you and I can stand before the Father in RIGHTEOUSNESS, clothed with the breastplate of righteousness!

Jasper (probably the green jasper), an opaque variety of chalcedony (quartz), was the third stone in the fourth row in the high priest's breastplate (Exodus 28:20), the twelfth stone. Green is symbolic of new life, resurrection life, fresh green oil (fresh anointing). Three is the number of resurrection life, of divine completeness. Four is the number of the earth and the creation (four corners of the earth), and the number of end times, as the fourth watch is the last watch. Twelve is the number of apostolic order that brings forth maturity (Ephesians 4:12-13). I believe the jasper is symbolic of an end-time many-membered new creation man (Ephesians 2:15), walking in the maturity and divine completeness of resurrection Life! Jesus Christ was the prototype of this ‘people’, and He came to bring MANY SONS into manifesting His glory!

Can you see the picture?... Jesus Christ appears as the jasper AND the sardius. Even though He embodied the fullness of the Spirit, the divine completeness of resurrection Life (jasper), by His shed Blood He took the fiery wrath of God that was poured out at the Cross (sardius)! It is in the light of THIS understanding that we then can see the significance of the emerald rainbow; “...and encircling the throne there was a halo that looked like a rainbow of emerald.” (Revelation 4:3 Amplified Bible)

Before we examine the significance of the color of the emerald, we must first look at this rainbow. “Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.” (Ezekiel 1:26-28 Amplified Bible) We know that the rainbow speaks of covenant (Genesis 9:13), and according to the passage in Ezekiel we just read, it speaks of the “likeness of the glory of the Lord.” Likeness and glory speak of the character or nature of Christ. And according to Hebrews 10:16-17, the New Covenant IS the Father imparting the character or nature of Christ INTO US; “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”

Given this understanding, I believe that the rainbow we read of in Revelation 4:3 speaks of a covenantal people, made in the likeness of the glory of the Lord, with the character and nature of Christ shining forth! Keep in mind also that this rainbow is “encircling the throne.” Most of us think of a rainbow as an arch or semicircle, however in reality they are a full circle. We usually don't see the full circle because the horizon of the Earth is in the way. However, from the high vantage point of a mountain top or an airplane, a complete circle of rainbow light can sometimes be seen. I believe that the Father is raising up a covenantal people whose ‘earth’ of the carnal earthen vessel is not ‘in the way’, thus allowing others to see the fullness of Christ.

Jesus often utilized word pictures (parables) to enhance the understanding of what He was teaching, and therefore I love the mental picture the following illustration paints for us. In order to have a rainbow you need light and rain, and in order to have rain you need a cloud. I believe we can see this ‘cloud’ in the book of Hebrews as it states, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses...” (Hebrews 12:1) I believe it is through this ‘cloud’ that we will see the RAIN of God upon those who are ‘dry and thirsty’ to bring forth a harvest of reproducing Christ in people and establish the REIGN of God on the earth! “...He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” (Hosea 6:3) You see, when the ‘cloud’ (that’s US in Christ!) begins to pour out ‘rain’ in the Light of Christ, the world will see the most glorious ‘rainbow’ they’ve ever seen!

“I do set My bow (rainbow) IN THE CLOUD, and it shall be for a token of a COVENANT between Me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow (rainbow) shall be SEEN IN THE CLOUD.” (Genesis 9:13-14, my input in parenthesis) Listen my friend, the Father has set His ‘rainbow’, His covenant, IN the ‘cloud’, IN US... and may I declare to you that He is bringing His ‘cloud’ (that’s US in Christ!) to bear upon the ‘earth’ of the carnal earthen vessel... and the ‘rainbow’, His covenant, shall be SEEN IN THE CLOUD! Isaiah expresses it this way, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen UPON THEE... the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be SEEN UPON THEE.” (Isaiah 60:1-2)

Keep in mind that as we look at this prophetic picture of ourselves in the emerald rainbow, we must remember that the emphasis is ultimately on Him and His Throne! “Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him...” (Revelation 1:7) Yes, it’s ALL about Him and “EVERY EYE shall see Him...” You see, the light of the rainbow is reflected to the eye at an angle of 42 degrees to the original ray of sunlight. Because the 42 degree angle is measured from each individual observer's eye, no two people see exactly the same rainbow. Every person is at the center of his or her own particular rainbow. Remember, the Father has set His rainbow IN THE CLOUD... perhaps YOU are the particular ‘rainbow’ that your neighbor or coworker will see Jesus in.

I find it fascinating that the rainbow appears at a 42 degree angle, because the number 42 is very significant in Biblical symbolism. The number 42 is the number of the Christ, the number of His appearing in the ‘cloud’. Let’s look at this further in the book of Matthew.

Matthew 1:1 speaks of “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ...” Normally we think merely of geneology when we read that verse, however the word translated as generation, ghenesis in Greek, means NATURE. Obviously, Jesus was not married with natural children, so WHO exactly IS this “generation of Jesus Christ” that carry His NATURE? Well, Hebrews 2:9 & 13 is speaking of Jesus as it says “But we are able to see Jesus... Here am I, (Jesus) I and the children whom God has given Me...” (Amplified Bible- my input in parenthesis) It is apparent that in the eyes of the Father, Jesus had ‘children’. However, Isaiah 53:8 says of Messiah, “...and who shall declare His generation? For He was cut off out of the land of the living...”; in other words, He won’t have natural children because He dies. We must then read on to verse 10 of Isaiah 53 as it says, “He SHALL see His SEED, He shall PROLONG His days...” That particular wording, “prolong His days”, is used throughout the book of Deuteronomy to speak of carrying on a genealogy in the land.

So, once again, WHO exactly IS this “generation of Jesus Christ” that carry His NATURE and carry on His genealogy? We can read of this ‘generation’ in Matthew 1:17 when it says “...from the carrying away into Babylon unto CHRIST are fourteen generations...” Get out your calculators (fingers and toes are acceptable also) and let’s count. Abraham to David are fourteen generations. David to Jechoniah and Babylonian exile are fourteen generations. Here’s where it gets interesting. Start in verse 12 of Matthew chapter 1 and keep in mind that Jechoniah was number fourteen in the last group; Shealtiel is #1, Zerubbabel is #2, Abiud is #3, Eliakim is #4, etc... then Joseph is #12, and Jesus is #13. Yes, you counted correctly. Jesus is #13, and THE CHRIST is #14, the 42nd GENERATION.

Yes, my friend, Jesus is the HEAD, He has preeminence in all things (Colossians 1:18), and we are called the BODY of CHRIST, the 42nd GENERATION. Just as the rainbow appears at a 42 degree angle, the 42nd GENERATION is a covenantal people that carry His NATURE and carry on His genealogy! Indeed, “He SHALL see His SEED, He shall PROLONG His days!” This 42nd GENERATION is the New Creation Man spoken of in Ephesians 2:15, “...that He from the two might create IN HIMSELF one New Man - one new quality of humanity out of the two.” (Amplified Bible).

How appropriate that this ‘rainbow’, the 42nd GENERATION, we read of in Revelation chapter 4 is a rainbow of EMERALD; “...and encircling the throne there was a halo that looked like a rainbow of emerald.” (Revelation 4:3 Amplified Bible) The emerald is a deep green variety of beryl, a very translucent (see-through) stone, in comparison to the jasper which was an opaque stone. Once again, the color green is symbolic of new life, RESURRECTION LIFE, fresh green oil (fresh anointing).

There is no RED in this ‘rainbow’, it is only manifesting the GREEN of RESURRECTION LIFE! That is because Jesus, by His shed RED Blood, took the RED fiery wrath of God that was poured out at the Cross, in order that the 42nd GENERATION would manifest only the GREEN of RESURRECTION LIFE! The emerald is a very translucent stone, in other words you can see through it. This covenantal people is a transparent, translucent people... you can see through them to see the Throne of God in the MIDST of them! Remember also that this ‘rainbow’, this 42nd GENERATION is “encircling the throne.” They live from a higher dimension where ‘earth’ of the carnal earthen vessel is not ‘in the way’, thus allowing others to see the fullness of the One who is seated on the Throne.

My friend, it is time to heed the call to ‘come up higher’ than the ‘second heaven view’! It is time to ‘come up higher’ to the third heaven! It is time to enter into another realm through this “door standing open in heaven.” It is time to change our focus from sin and the church in the earth, and focus upon the Throne of God and the Glory of God. It is time we begin “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done...” (Isaiah 46:10)

“And it shall come to pass, when I bring a CLOUD over the earth, that the BOW shall be SEEN IN THE CLOUD.” (Genesis 9:13-14) Father, we stand in agreement that You are bringing Your CLOUD of witnesses, Your CLOUD of glory, to overshadow the EARTH of the carnal earthen vessel! And we stand in agreement that the RAINBOW, Your RESURRECTION LIFE, be openly SEEN and visible IN THE CLOUD, Your covenantal people!
